Family LifeGroup Questions

Each week a list of relevant and thematic questions directly related to the passage is provided as a starting point for your family's Life Group or Personal Study time.

This weeks passage we will look at the Unmerciful Servant in Matthew 18:21-35

Start with prayer then read this week's passage aloud.

1. Relate a time when you were younger that you gave or received payback for something done. The funnier the better.

2. Forgiveness feels great—as long as we’re the beneficiaries. We like being forgiven, but it’s not very fun when you have to ask for forgiveness. What holds people back from forgiving?

3. Look in this parable for anything that indicates forgivness might require action. Now read the following verses, Matthew 5:23-24 and Mark 11:15-16. Do Jesus’ teachings portray forgiveness as just a feeling or as something that requires a deliberate decision?

4. When and how does God forgive us? What is required of us in order to recieve Gods forgivness?

5. Are we called to forgive unconditionally? How many times did Jesus say we should forgive in this parable? Look up Luke 17:3-4. Are there any conditions attached to either one of this passages?

6. Can you have a “forgiving spirit” and yet withhold forgiveness? How so?

7. Can you relate more to the king or the unmerciful servant in this parable? Why?

8. How does unforgiveness affect your relationship with God? Look up Matthew 6:14-15 if you need an example.

9. How is the large sum of money owed to the king a picture of our relationship with God?

10. The king had to remind the servant how much he had been forgiven. Do you find you need to be reminded of this at times? What circumstance usually brings this back to memory?

11. How does this parable relate back to the beatitudes in Matthew 5? Why is it so important that Christians be forgiving in all circumstances?

Pray that God reveals anything you’ve done to hurt or offend someone, and helps you to seek

forgiveness. Pray that God reveals anything you need to forgive, and be willing to offer it.
